Importance of food, water and energy
Food, water and energy are resources that help maintain social and economic wellbeing. Their production/consumption isn't equally spread between countries. The UK has reserves of each resource type.
Food
Social
Without access to enough safe, nutritious food people can become malnourished — not have the right balance of nutrients, e.g. iron deficiency causes tiredness and can affect children's development.
Economic
People who aren't getting enough to eat may not perform as well at school, meaning that they lack Skills needed to help a country's economic development.
Energy
Social
Countries need energy for industry and transport, as well as for use in homes. Electricity can allow industries to develop, creating jobs and making countries wealthier.
Economic
The way of life in high income countries (HICs) depends on having a large, stable supply of energy. Without electricity, people may burn wood or kerosene for cooking and to provide light and heat
Water
Social
people need clean, safe water for drinking, cooking and washing
Economic
Having to walk long distances to fetch clean water can have an economic impact on a country's economy - people are able to spend less time working, and children may not be able to go to school
