How to help students with learning difficulties
Ways to tell the student might need help
The student seems to have trouble focusing
The student asks to leave the classroom a lot
Student is very slow to finish assignments
Do you think the students problem is behavioral or academic?
Academic
Identify what the student is struggling with and give see if the whole class might benefit from a review of that subject matter. Example: if one student is bad a spelling, maybe everyone might like to play some spelling games
If the students issue runs deeper than what can be helped with a few classes and some extra attention from you
Contact their parents and let them know the student is struggling
You can reccomend working with parents on homework or the parent may help students more when preparing for an exam.
You can reccomend tutoring
Depending on the subject the student is struggling in, you make reccomend studying at home by watching youtube videos or using an academic app that gives the student extra practice in the subject matter.
Student never asks for help.
Behavioral
Try to remain calm when dealing with a misbehaving student.
Make sure the student knows that you dislike their behavior, not the student him/herself.
In a conflict situation, give the student a chance to respond, for you to hear his/her side of the story. Do not assume you know exactly what is going on until you hear from everyone involved. (Shalaway, 2019)
Treat all students respectfully.
If you think the student problem stems from something deeper an may be caused from a learning disability reccomend your student be evaluated for special education.
If the student is eligible they can work with the special education department and develope an individual improvement plan (IEP)
Once the plan is in place, check in with the student and their family to make sure that everyone involved is happy wiht the outcome. Also make sure that other stafff members are aware of any special accomadations that may need to be made to help that student.
If the probelm presists, contact parents
The student constantly asks for help
