Evolution
What are species?
Biological species concept is a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce fertile offspring
-
Reproductive isolation could impede member os two species from interbreeding and producing fertile offspring
-
-
-
What can separates them?
-
sympatric isolation is where the group is different (due to chromosomes) and can't reproduce with parent population
-
Darwinian Evolution
Charles Darwin
-
-
Major influences
-
Lyell published the principles of geology (fossils), which inspired Darwin to think of gradual evolution
HMS Beagle
Famous observation was the Galapagos finches (demonstrated that birds adapt to their environment for better survival)
-
Natural selection
Individuals who inherit certain traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals due to those traits
-
if environment changes, natural selections will adapt to these new conditions, which sometimes leads to a new species
Individuals do not evolve, they simply adapt to their environment
Artificial selection is done by humans where they modify species over many generations by electing and breeding individuals that possess desired traits
Evidence for evolution
-
Vestigial structures
Ex: Us humans, have a tail bone but we don't use it because we don't need it to survive in our environmen
-
Homology
development of diff, species of organisms based upon their descent from a common evolutionary ancestor
Ex: the structure of forelimbs of humans, bats, deer are all very similar
-
Fossil Record
-
In the geological Strata, fossils showed that new species would appear while older ones would disappear (survival of the fittest)
Convergence
-
-
analogous structures
features share similar functions, but not common ancestor
We adapt to the environment, regardless of our ancestor
