Atomic bomb made Truman more confident in dealing with the Soviet Union
Atomic bomb made Stalin more determined to seek 'security' in Eastern Europe
Atomic bomb made countries in Western Europe more confident about siding with USA
Atomic bomb increased tensions still further
Truman was condient that USA would win if there was any war
By 1949, the syperoiwers possessed weapons which could kill millions of people instantly and the destructive potential made both sides scared
The Telegrams
Long Telegram made the US Government much more pessimistic
US government began to assume the worst
American politicans assumed that it was impossible to coexist peacefully with Soviet Union
Novikov Telegram
made the Soviet Government much more pessimistic
Soviet government began to assume the worst
Both sides concluded that there was very little point in negotiating with the other side
The only way to secure a deal was to be aggressive
They need to be:
Needed to be tough with the other side
Should not give any ground to the other side
Needed to defend themselves at all costs
Long telegram (Februrary 1946)
Claimed USSR wanted to destory capitalism
Soviets believed that everyone outside the USSR was trying to destroy communism
Soviets would back down if faced with a show of strength from USA
Nobikov Telegram (September 1946)
Portrayed an equally negative picture of the USA
USA wanted to use its millitary power to dominate and control the world
USA was not intrested in collaboration with USSR
American people would support a war against communism and USSR
Satellite States
Stalin decided to take control much Eastern Europe
Stalin needed a friendly Polish Governmentas they had been used 3 times since 1914 to invade Russia
Stalin decided to use Eastern Europe as a 'buffer zone'. If Germany or the USA wanted to attack USSR they would have to attack through Eastern Europe to defend the Soviet Union
Indicated the Soviet Union was expansionist
Claimed USSR wanted to take over Western Europe, Asia and Africa too
Creation of satellite states prevented the United States from being able to trade with Eastern Europe
