Truman Doctrine (March 1947)

Truman believed the Soviet Union would only respect him if he was tough with them
US sent financial help to the Greek Government to help them fight communism
Greek Government was then able to defeat communist rebels and restore Greece as a capitalist country
Truman Doctrine was a turning point because their views of each other
Marshall Plan (June 1947)
Gave financial help to European countries which suffered damage during WW2
USA were giving away cash, machinery, food and technological assistance to countries which needed help
USA provided $17 billion in Marshall Aid
Marshall plan was self intrested as it was believed that only poorer countries would turn to communism
Prevent poorer countries turning communist
US demanded that countries that took Marshall Aid would have to trade fewwly with the USA
Cominform (1947)
Aimed to organise the different communist governments and communist parties across the world
Cominform was set up in 1957 by USSR
Direct response to the Truman Doctrine
Successor of an older organisation, which had co-ordinated Communist parties across Europe in the 1920s and 1930s
Political oranisation
Involved Stalin and USSR controlling what happened in other communist countries
Expected use similar deomestic policies
Comecon
Comecon was set up in 1949 by the USRR
Direct response to the Marshall Plan
Gave help to countries in Eastern Europe, such as Czechoslovakia and East Germany
Economic organisation
Comecon aimed to provide money and economic help to communist countries which were struggling financially
Some memebers received economc assistance from the USSR
Meant to trade only with other communist countries
Did not accept Marshall AId
