Hyperinflation
1923
Causes
Printing money to pay workers’ wages dilute the value of currency in Germany. The Economy was in difficulty with one of its prized regions, the Ruhr, being occupied by the French and Belgians. It meant that the Deutsche Mark quickly became nearly worthless.

Advantages
businesses that had borrowed money
from banks were able to pay it back easily; a rise in
the price of food helped farmers; foreigners in
Germany found they could exchange foreign currency
for marks and easily afford things most Germans
could not.
By August 1923 a loaf of bread cost 230,000
marks and you needed to transport the sum to the
bakery in a wheelbarrow. Some people even used
notes to wallpaper their homes – an indication of
how devalued the currency had become.
Results
Many Germans now blamed the Weimar Government for not doing more to remove the French and Belgian forces from the Ruhr and bring back stability to the German economy.
