Formed elements
Erythrocytes- red blood cells. They are donut shaped bags of hemoglobin. They do not contain a nucleus or organelles. 45% of whole blood (hematocrit). Their function is to transport respiratory gases (O2 and CO2).
-
Platelets- cytoplasmic fragments of giant megakaryocytes. They for temporary platelet plugs that seal breaks in blood vessels. Platelet formation is regulated by thrombopoietin. Since Platelets are anucleate, they quickly age and degenerate in about 10 days if they are not involved in clotting. Their granules contain many chemicals that act in the clotting process including serotonin, Ca2+, enzymes, ADP, and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF).
