THE TRANSITION ELEMENTS
-
PROPERTIES
- they form coloured compounds
- they can form ions with different charges- in other words, they have variable valency. (The different oxidation states lead to the different colours of compound,)
-
- the elements and their compounds often act as catalysts for other reactions.
USING IRON AS EXAMPLE
IRON:
- is strong enough to be used in building bridges
- has nearly 8 times the density of water
- melts at 1535 degrees celcius
- the compounds of iron are usually green or brown
- iron can form Fe^2+ and Fe^3+ ions
The name of the iron compound tells you which ion is in it:
- iron (II) oxide contains Fe^2+ ions
-iron (III) oxide contains Fe^3+ ions.
- iron is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of ammonia
