Alleles
Dominant
The dominant allele is the trait that always shows up in an organism. The dominant allele will always show whether there is another dominant or a recessive.
Recessive
recessive allele is always hidden whenever there is a dominant paired with it. you can use a Punnett Square for a reference. The only time you can have a recessive allele is if there is another recessive paired with it.
Eg: picture shown there is a 25% chance for the recessive allele
An allele is a certain type of gene. The allele is the specific gene. Eg: Gene= eye color Allele= green eyes
-
Heterozygous
This means to have two different alleles of a particular gene or genes. Say a parent had an allele for brown and blue eyes, he would be heterozygous.
-
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes. If you only have an allele for brown eyes and brown eyes only, you would be considered homozygous.
-
Gregor Mendel was a pioneer in genetics; he discovered the laws of inheritance, which showed genes come in pairs and are inherited from each parent. He created Mendelian genetics which is a theory of genetic inheritance.
Questions
Is an addiction to alcohol hereditary or environmental? For example, your grandparent drank or you parents did before you were born. Could having the want to drink more come from them, or could it come from peer pressure and you wanting to fit in?
Do you think the way you act/your personality is more about the way you were raised or simply your genetics?
You have an extra finger, but your wife doesn't. Y'all are both heterozygous. What are the possibilities that your baby could have an extra finger, what about a regular amount of fingers?
Genotype
An organism's hereditary information, also know as genes. Genotype is one of three main factors that determine the phenotype, an organism's actual observed properties, the other two being inherited factors, and certain environmental factors. For example, I'm 6'3 and considered tall.
-
Phenotype
An organism's actual observed properties, such as development, or behavior. Basically, all of the characteristics displayed from your genes by an organism under a set of environmental factors. Connecting to the genotype example, putting me in a short people or tall only club would be a good idea. My reaction to it would be my phenotype.
