Green House Gases
CO2
It is produced by combustion of wood and other organic materials and fossil fuels such as coal, peat, petroleum and natural gas.
-
-
CO
-
comes from the incomplete combustion of carbon. Most commonly occurs in the break down of fossil fuels as there is carbon , oxygen and high temperatures
-
NOx
-
Nitrogen oxide is a by-product of fuel combustion in mobile and stationary sources. When any fossil fuel is burnt, part of the nitrogen that is in the fuel and surrounding air gets oxidized creating nitrogen oxide emissions. The majority of stationary emissions come from coal fired power plants.
-
SO2
-
this is released by volcanoes when they erupt however the lack of volcanic activities over the last few years means that it is unlikely the volcanoes are greatly effecting climate change
About 99% of the sulfur dioxide in air comes from human sources. The main source of sulfur dioxide in the air is industrial activity that processes materials that contain sulfur, eg the generation of electricity from coal, oil or gas that contains sulfur.
water vapour
-
as global warming increases the amount of water in the atmosphere increases because as it gets hotter more and more of the oceans evaporate and therefor more goes into the atmosphere. This cycle repeats over and over again.
CH4
-
The majority of methane is produced in the livestock industry and effects the atmosphere in the same way as carbon dioxide
