Definition
The picturesque is an aesthteic ideal introduced in the cultural debate in 1782 by William Gilpin. Picturesque can be found in nature, especially in the English gardens and in visual arts. It's characterized by roughness and rusticity. This ideal is considered a mediator between beautiful and sublime. Picturesque challenges the ideology of the Grand Tour, showing how an exploration of Britain could compete with the classically oriented landscape.
