Genes
alleles
Alleles are different forms of a gene, specific piece of a gene.
In this picture the alleles are on the chromosomes. There is one allele for purple flowers on one chromosome and there is one allele for white flowers on another chromosome.
-
recessive
An example of recessive alleles would be blue eyes, the offspring would have brown eyes.
In this picture the recessive allele is the blue eyes. The offspring has a 25% chance to have blue eyes.
Recessive describes the allele or the gene of someone or something. The recessive allele is hidden or covered up when the dominant allele is present.
phenotype
-
In this picture the phenotype is the tiger's fur, the fur and the pattern are visible traits.
-
dominant
Dominant describes the allele or the gene of someone or something. A dominant allele is always shown in an organism, especially over the recessive allele.
In this picture the dominant allele is the brown eyes. In this picture the organism has 75% chance of having brown eyes.
An example of a dominant allele would be brown eyes, and the offspring has brown eyes.
genotype
-
In the picture the genotype is the alleles the offspring is receiving. The offspring is receiving genes for both purple and white flowers.
-
Mendel
Gregor Mendel was an Austrian scientist who studied genetics extensively. Mendel planted pea plants and observed the generations of the pea plants and it's traits.
-
While Mendel was observing the pea plants, he noticed through the generations the plants inherited the color of the seeds, flower color and the shape and color of pods.
heterozygous
An example of heterozygous genes is when offspring have one allele for blue eyes and one allele for brown eyes.
In this picture both the parents are heterozygous, both parents have different alleles. Both the parents have two different alleles.
-
homozygous
-
An example of homozygous genes is when an organism has brown eyes, and the parents have brown eyes.
In the picture both the green pod and yellow pod are homozygous, the green pod has two of the same alleles and the yellow pod has two of the same alleles.
