Kohlberg's Moral Stages
3) Conformity & Interpersonal Accord (the "good boy/girl" level. Effort is made to secure approval and maintain friendly relations with others)
Woody from the Toy Story
as the "leader" amongst the toys, Woody works hard to not only maintain the approval of his friends, but also his spot as the "favorite toy"
however, in a fit of rage where he ends up putting Buzz Lightyear in harm's way, he comes under fire by his fellow toys, and in an attempt to re-secure their approval, Woody attempts to save Buzz. By working to gain the approval of his friends again, Woody demonstrates Kohlberg's 3rd stage because he risks his own life to maintain friendly relations with others and be seen as the "good toy" again
5) Social Contract (mutual benefit, reciprocity. Morally right and legally right are not always the same. Utilitarian rules that make life better for everyone
Mulan from Mulan
Mulan goes under disguise as "Ping" in order to prevent her father from having to go to war, which would be harmful for him as he is already injured
Although fighting in the war for women is illegal and she could ensure her imprisonment and bring dishonor to her family, Mulan disobeys what is legally right to do what is morally right and saves China
Therefore, Mulan fits Kohlberg's 5th moral stage because she does what is morally right despite the potential legal consequences that may arise from it
-
2) Self Interest (interest shifts to rewards rather than punishment - effort is made to secure greatest benefit for oneself
Rapunzel from Tangled
-
however, Rapunzel deliberately disobeys her mother's rules in order to fulfill her dream of seeing the floating lanterns at the yearly festival
through acting in her self interest, she reflects Kohlberg's 2nd stage because the reward of seeing the floating lanterns is more important to her than any implied punishment that may come from her mother
-
4) Authority & Social Order (orientation towards fixed rules. The purpose of morality is maintaining the social order. Interpersonal accord is expanded to include the entire society)
Harry Potter
in order for his adoptive family to feel comfortable around him and preserve their idea of a "perfect home-life", Harry rarely used his powers despite the mistreatment he faced
through not using his powers, Harry adheres to Kohlberg's 4th stage because he doesn't use his powers at home in order to maintain social order in the house, as well as remain as what is perceived as normal. He follows fixed rules, whether or not they are fair towards him, to maintain social conformity
