Kohlberg Moral Development
Level 1: Pre-conventional morality
Stage 2: Individualism and exchange
Children recognize that there is multiple right views that are handed down by the authorities.
Children recognize that different individuals have different viewpoints.
Stage 1: Obedience and punishment orientation
The child has a good behavior and acts better in order to avoid being punished.
When they are punished, they are aware that they must have done something wrong.
Level 2: Conventional morality
Stage 3: Good interpersonal relationships
The child has a good behavior in order to be seen as a goo person by other individuals.
Their answers relate to the approval of others.
Stage 4: Maintaining the Social Order
The child becomes aware that there are wider rules of society and what they are, so that the child can follow them.
Judgements concern obeying the rules to avoid breaking the law and guilt.
Level 3: Post-conventional morality
Stage 5: Social contract and individual rights
The child becomes aware that occasionally they will work against the interest of particular individuals.
The realize they will work against the interest of some groups even though rules and laws might exist for the greater good.
Stage 6: Universal principles
People have developed their own set of moral guidelines which may or may not fit the law.
Judgement based on self-chosen principles and moral reasoning based on individual rights and justice
