The Production of Fossil Fuels - for coal
How is coal formed
The Energy in coal is energy from plants that had lived a long time ago
Coal is made from remains of plants.
Over time progression, heat and pressure from the earth would build up on the plants
When the heat and pressure from the earth builds up on those plants, they do chemical and physical reactions.
One of the reactions that happens is all the oxygen in the plant is pushed out.
When the oxygen is pushed out - the only chemical in the plant are rich carbon deposits which then form into coal.
The 3 types of coal are:
lignite coal
bituminous coal
anthracite coal
Coal can only form in places where there are swampy forests. When the plants die, the plants have to fall into a swamp for the production of coal to begin. This is the environment that coal is found.
The Production of Fossil Fuels - for oil
Oil is formed from large amounts of small plants and animals that lived many years ago.
These animals are such as
Zooplankton
Algae
When these plants and animals die, they fall to the bottom of the sea once they have died.
Over time, the plants and animals will get trapped under layers of sand and mud
The environment
that oil is made in is in mud and sand. The animals and plants all come from the sea or either have to fall into the sea.
Our oil is found in cap rock and clay
When the oil has been formed by the dead plants and animals, the oil will migrate through pores in the rock until it will get stuck in cap rock and clay - which is where the oil that we use is found today.
When the oil is retreived - it will have to go through a series of extraction of the enviroments it has been in - for example, taking all the mud and sand out of the oil and replacing it with emulsifier.
