Carbon Cycle
Carbon Cycle
When plants and animals decompose they are broken down by microorganisms, such as bacterias and fungi. These decomposers release CO2 back into the air by respiration, as they break down the material
-
-
Decomposition of materials means that habitats can be maintained for the organisms that live there, such as nutrients are returned to the soil and waste material such as dead leaves do not just pile up
-
Some useful plant and animal products such as wood and fossil fuels are burned. They release CO2 back into the air
The cycle is powered by photosynthesis. Green plants use the carbon from carbon dioxide to make carbohydrates, fats and proteins
Stages
Stage 1
-
Glucose is then used to make carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the plants
-
Stage 2
-
-
-
If animal is eaten by a predator, stage 2 occurs again
Stage 3
-
If a lot of animals die quickly, the decomposers cannot feed on them. Over millions of years, they get changed into fossil fuels
When plants and animals die, bodies are broken down by decomposers e,g fungi and bacteria
Stage 4
When fossil fuels get burnt, the CO2 gets released into the atmosphere
