Human Mobility Research Lab
Culture
Research is based on the end goal of having clinical applications to help people
Provides relevance and creates a perception of importance [2]
Extrinsic motivator is to get research published as research papers and journal articles
Can lead to time pressures to submit before a deadline, which may hinder creativity [8]
Most lab members are there for a set amount of time i.e. PhD, Master's
May lead to constraints, as time runs out before someone is able to fully explore a topic
May lead to more success, as it keeps people on track
Work is both collaborative and individual
An individual working on a project may reach out to the others to ask for help on how to progress
Projects may be individual or team explorations with multiple members collaborating
Lab projects are typically separate entities from each other - mitigates competition
Lab's approach to research is similar to the 4 stages of creative practice [11]
1) Exploration - Have an open ended idea for a research topic
2) Elaboration - Narrow the scope to form a research question and hypothesis that will be answered through the planned research protocol
3) Expression - Ideas expressed in research papers
4) Reflection - Findings and methods reflected on for future progress
Encouraged that the research topic is chosen by the researcher
Provides intrinsic motivation that has been linked to stimulating creative work [4]
Research begins with an open ended idea
Mentality that bad results do not exist, as there is always something to be learned
Allows for a tolerance of failures [13]
Encourages trying different things and perservering
No right or wrong answer that exists
Cultivates small C thinking of individuals in this environment [12]
Freedom to develop one’s own experiments and testing strategies [3]
Habitat
Lighting
No windows
Feeling of detachment from the outside world
No available natural light
Bright lights that can be dimmed throughout lab
Desired lighting can be obtained
Mobile equipment
Allows various types of tests to be completed
Ceilings can be raised
Cameras can be moved
Floor can be rearranged
Large open concept space
Clutter is minimized [6]
Allows for a range of activities to be completed that most labs do not have the size for
Colour
All walls are white, except for one orange wall
Only a few colours may help in keeping the mood relaxing for an area requiring hard mental work [14]
White may be too stark and unnatural [14]
Resources
People
Diverse lab team to allow for collaboration opportunities to enhance the creative process [10]
Professors: Mechanical Engineering, Kinesiology, Nursing
Students: PhD, Master's, Undergraduate
External members to provide real -world applications for the work done
Clinical partners
Industry Partners
Patients
Physical
State-of the Art Facility with technology to allow for cutting edge work
Motion capture cameras
Built in force plates
Under the flooring
In treadmill
Advanced software
Funding for research relies on grant funding
Application process is tedious and takes time away from exploration and experimentation
Difficult to obtain with a less than 10% success rate [19]
Research may be designed with caution to avoid grant denial
Potential creative space inhibitor
