Experiments
-
'Attempt within artificial conditions established by an investigator to test the influence of one or more variables upon others.'
-
-
-
Systematic & rigorous & allow researcher to observe effects of variables under controlled conditions.
Laboratory Experiments
-
Practical Issues
Cannot be used to study the passed - snapshot study, cannot look for trends.
-
Can be costly - pay researcher, pps, equipment etc.
Access to a group may be difficult - they may not agree to take part in the study (deviant behaviour).
Ethical Issues
Informed consent - can be hard to obtain due to the Hawthorne effect and some groups may not fully understand (children or those with learning difficulties).
-
-
Theoretical Issues
Reliability - controlled procedure that can be repeated and tested, not affected by researchers feelings or opinions (objective) & identify cause and effect relationships (Quantitative data).
Hawthorne Effect - pps may know they are being studied due to researcher/ artificial conditions so do not act in a natural manner (low validity).
-
Field Experiments
-
Practical Issues
-
-
-
-
Characteristics - researchers may need to be trained to record behaviour in a natural environment without being noticed.
Ethical Issues
-
Deception - wrong to mislead people & carry out research on them without their knowledge or consent.
-
Theoretical Issues
Reliable - controlled procedure that can be repeated & tested, not affected by researchers feelings/ opinions (objective data).Identify cause & effect relationships (quantitative data).
-
No Hawthorne Effect - pps do not know they are being studied, display natural behaviour - increases validity (but still low).
-
-
Cause and Effect
Independent Variable - Altered by the researcher,
