SIMILARITIES WITHIN THE GROUP
All elements are non-metals
they are colorless gases, and occur naturally in air
they exists as single atoms - they are
monatomic
they are
unreactive
or
inert
- they do not normally react with anything
but their physical properties show trends down the group
density & boiling points increase down the group
WHY ARE THEY UNREACTIVE?
their atoms have a stable arrangement of outer-shell electrons.
they do not need to bond to other atoms to gain, or lose, electrons.
THEIR USES
helium is used in balloons and airships because it is lighter than air, and non-flammable
argon is used to provide an inert atmosphere, for example in welding and in tungsten light bulbs.
the unreactivity of noble gases makes them very useful.
(oxygen would react with hot metals being welded, and hot tungsten)
