Pre-assessment for Differentiation: Spelling Strategies Test
Students who had 0-1 answers incorrect
Synonym Project:
Students who had most or all of the answers on the spelling test correct will work in small groups to find synonyms for their spelling test words:
They will use a thesaurus to find a list of synonyms
They will use a dictionary to find definitions for 5 of the synonyms
They will add the original word, its definition and the five synonyms with their definitions to an infographic on their computers.
This activity will challenge students who are already adept at spelling strategies to find and learn new vocabulary words to broaden their language. It will also allow them to learn the spelling of these words as well as practice writing definitions.
Assessments to Track Learning Throughout Unit:
This group will continue to have spelling tests, but their follow-up spelling tests will be based on the synonyms they added to their infographics from their first test.
Spelling Test 1: Pull synonyms directly from their infographics. They will be required to spell the word correctly and use it in a sentence to show their knowledge of the word and how to use it appropriately.
Spelling Test 2: Uses words with similar spelling to their synonyms from their infographics (no sentence required).
Spelling Test 3: Spelling test introducing unique spellings of words.
Students who had 2-4 answers incorrect
Spelling Patterns Flashcards:
For the largest group of students, they will work in pairs to create flashcards to practice and observe spelling patterns in English.
They will determine which vowel sounds are found in each of their spelling words
They will come up with new words that have the same spelling patterns
They will write all the words onto flashcards used to quiz each other's spelling
This activity will help students to realize which type of letters to associate with which type of sounds. They will begin to recognize words that can be sounded out. They will also practice hearing the sounds that these words make.
Assessments to Track Learning Throughout Unit
This group will continue to have spelling tests that build on the strategies they have learned from this activity.
Spelling Test 1: Uses words with similar spelling to pre-assessment to practice the strategies they learned.
Spelling Test 2: Follow-up test from SpellingCity.com using long "a" sound strategies ("ai," "ei," "a_e," "ay," etc.).
Spealling Test 3: Uses words with similar spelling to long "a" sound test to practice the strategies they learned.
Students who had 5 or more answers incorrect
Spelling Strategies Memory Game:
Students in this group likely haven't been taught basic English spelling strategies or are confused about the consistencies. This group will need to review long and short vowel sounds as well as the vocabulary and spelling patterns that go with them.
Using the cards from a long and short vowel sounds memory game, I will sit with this group at first to go over short "u" words and long "u" words and ask students to make observations about them. For example, we will notice which words have a silent "e" at the end and how many consonants are between the "u" sound and the "e."
We will look at the different spellings of short and long "u," such as "oo" and "u_e" for long "u" and "u" and "ou" for short "u."
After the review, the students will play the memory game to practice identifying the vowels sounds.
This activity will establish some foundation in English that these students may have missed. It will teach them spelling strategies for many words in the English language and will help them to better identify words and their spelling in the future.
Assessments to Track Learning Throughout Unit
This group will review continue to take pre- and post-assessments based on what they learned as they build their spelling strategies.
Spelling Test 1: Re-take initial test from SpellingCity.com to check for improvement and understanding of concepts.
Spelling Test 2: Pre-assessment of follow-up test from SpellingCity.com using long "a" sound strategies.
Spelling Test 3: Post-assessment of long "a" sound spelling test from SpellingCity.com.
