What does Active listening means?
Active listening is a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice.
Active listening not only means focusing fully on the speaker but also actively showing verbal and non-verbal signs of listening.
Signs of Active Listening
Non-Verbal Signs of Attentive or Active Listening
Posture(pose of showing interactions;to lean slightly forward or sideways whilst sitting)
Mirroring(Mimic speakers reaction-empathy)
Eye Contact(Showing concentration;encouraging speaker)
Distraction(Things not to do as an Active listener;fidgeting, looking at a clock or watch, doodling)
Smile(Agreeing)
Verbal Signs of Attentive or Active Listening
Positive Reinforcement(a strong signal of attentiveness/ must used in caution)
Remembering(Useful to emphasize that listener understood speakers points)
Questioning
Useful to clarify what speaker said and show interest about the topic what speaker is talking.
Closed Questions
The questions which lead to short answers(yes/no)
EX) "Did you see the football game yesterday?"
Open Questions
The questions that could occur further discussion and elaboration.
EX) "What was the traffic like this morning?"
Reflection(repeating paraphrasing the points of speaker)
Clarification(questioning for rechecking)
Summarization(repeating the points of speaker in listener's words-restating clearly and logically-giving the speaker chance to correct if needed)
