Cardiovascular System
Anatomy of the heart
Pericardium
Serous pericardium
-
Visceral pericardium- outer layer of the epicardium,
and visceral layer of the pericardium
-
-
-
Wall of the heart
Myocardium- middle layer, composed of cardiac muscle cells and collagenous fibers, thickest layer
-
The cells are connected closely together through
gap junctions and desmosomes at the intercalated discs
-
Endocardium- innermost layer of the heart, made of endothelium, lines chambers where blood circulates and covers heart valves
Epicardium- outermost layer of the heart, innermost layer of the pericardium
-
Valves
2 Atrioventricular-
Right AV valve- (tricuspid) connected to very strong strands of connective tissue via chordae tendinae, prevent back flow.
-
2 Semilunar-
Pulmonary SL valve- deoxygenated blood from the right atrium leaves the heart through here to go to the lungs
Aortic SL valve- oxygenated blood from the left ventricle leaves the heart through this valve to go to the body

EDV
The amount of blood that fills the ventricle before it contracts, measured in mL/beat
ESV
The amount of blood that remains in the ventricle after contraction, measured in mL/beat
