Why teach rimes?
Rime - the vowel(s) and letters following the onset (letter(s) before a vowel) of a word
Rimes are more consistent in the sounds they make than a vowel alone is

Children usually learn new words by thinking of words they already know...rimes help with that!
Steps for teaching with shared reading
Reading the text (read together as a class)
Introducing a skill (teach spelling patterns based on the rime)
Working with words (use the text in a way that allows students to manipulate it - hands on)
Writing (let students write their own texts based on the structure of the shared text)
Rereading (allow students to reread or illustrate the text for fun later!)
