Product analysis - Kitchen Utensils
Cutting guard
Benefits: Prevents someone who cuts food from cutting themselves. Holds the food in place, and makes it more safe when chopping as there is barrier there to guide them.
Issues: The guard is not 100% safe so there could be a possible incident if the guard did not protect the user. The guard could move out of place, again this is then not that safe when cutting as there won't be that normal protection.
Environments: The cutting guard will be used in the kitchen so it should be suitable to be used with food and to be washed or wiped down.
Materials: It could be made out of plastic, meaning that it's durable, easy to use and can be wiped down. Also lightweight, this is a very important factor as older people cannot physically hold heavier items.
Target market: For the elderly, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and people who find it hard to focus when cutting e.g. shaking. For everyone,to be inclusive, even if they don't have a disability they still will want to be protected.
Aesthetics: The product will have to look aesthetically pleasing by using materials that have a pleasing look to them along with them being a colourful, bright colour.
Safety: It should protect the user from cutting them selves as the guard with protect their fingers and also their hands. This may not be 100% protected as it could shift so the user still needs to be very aware of their fingers and where the knife is!
Chopping board with a grater
Aesthetics:The product should look clean, colourful and modern. The grater should be carefully placed into the tray so it doesn't stick out and it is flat. The material will be aesthetically pleasing by being smooth and having a clean finished look.
Benefits: Helps the elderly or the forgetful or people with Parkinson disease. Everything is in one place meaning they will not forget where they put them. Also it means they can transfer this tray around the kitchen to different parts if needed and most of the utensils they use will be together.
Safety: The grater will be inserted into the wood tray and will be flat so it isn't dangerous, also they won't have to hold the grater a long with what ever they are grating. The only thing that could hurt them may be the grater if they accidentally scraped their hand.
Issues: The tray may be heavy so carrying it around may be a slight problem if they wanted to move it. The grater may not be the usual dimensions of a grater meaning it may be harder to grate bigger things but then again they could always chop everything into a smaller piece.
Environments: It will be used in the kitchen and be able to be stored in the kitchen. It should also be able to be washed and be wiped down after use and be safe when working with food.
Materials: The grater will be made out of metal, which is the usual grater material. The actual chopping board may be made out of wood or even plastic as it then will be able to be wiped down and easily washed. Wood or plastic are both easy to use and get hold of which is an advantage.
Target market: For everyone as it is inclusive but especially for the people who find it hard to remember to use certain kitchen utensils, find them heavy e.g the grater they don't need to hold it now. For people who shake e.g Parkinson's disease will find it easier to have everything on a tray so they don't have to hold as much.
Chopping board with a spike part and place for food to go into when chopped.
Benefits:The benefits of this kitchen utensil will be that it makes kitchen life easier. Firstly it has a compartment to push the chopped food into it while you cut the other this is very useful then you can scrape it into a pan after this. Also the useful spike part to keep the food stable while cutting it prevents fingers or hands being cut.
Issues: I don't know how the compartment will be added on, maybe it will be a draw coming out of the chopping board. The chopping board may be heavy so might be hard to handle when moving it around the kitchen. The spikes could break if they are made out of plastic because the food may be harder then the plastic, the spikes will need to be made out of a strong plastic.
Aesthetics: The chopping board will be very clean and colourful. The spike part may be a different colour from the wood as that is definitely going to be plastic. The wood will be sanded down to a perfect finish!
Environments: This will be stored and used in the kitchen, so it needs to be suitable, so it should be food safe and can be used around lots of different types of food.
Safety:There isn't anything dangerous with the actual chopping board but obviously it's what is being used on the chopping board which is dangerous - the knife. If it is used safely then it should be fine, the food then get scraped into the compartment. The spike part isn't dangerous but when pressing the fruit or veg into it to hold it steady when cutting be careful not to spike yourself.
Target Market: This will be used by everyone who uses kitchen utensils but especially for those that maybe only have one working hand or even have only one hand, so they would find the spikes very useful as it would stable to food while cutting it with their hand. Everyone will be able to use this and find it very useful especially the compartment as most people don't know what to do with the food after it has been cut.
Materials:The spikes will be suitably made out of plastic as it will be able to cut into fruit and veg with ease. The chopping board may also be made out of plastic as that would work with the plastic draw compartment sliding in and out when the food has been cut.
