In January 2018, the US wing of Dutch beverage manufacturer Heineken released its Strongbow cider brand in 8.5oz (250ml) cans containing 100 calories each. Each variety pack carton contains 12 cans with three different flavours. The ciders contain no artificial flavours or colours.
Non-alcohol malt beverages company O’Doul’s launched an Insta-ready new can design for 2018 Blackout Wednesday. The limited-edition O’Doul’s cans, designed by the celebrated graphic designer Mr Kiji launched at selected Manhattan bars. The design features quirky geometric patterns and retro pastels.
In October 2018, London’s Fuller’s Brewery introduced the 2018 edition of Vintage Ale, which was brewed using five different homegrown hops, namely British Olicana, Ernest, Target, Challenger, Goldings and Northdown hops. It is described as having a fruity and tropical palate with notes of spices, herbs, and citrus.
Suffolk-based coffee startup Paddy & Scott’s is aiming to help bartenders speed up the process of making coffee-based cocktails with the release of a cold-brew ready-to-drink (RTD) variant. Launched in November 2018, Sexy Black Nitro Cold Brew Coffee is made with 100% craft coffee and infused with nitrogen.
Wine
In December 2018, Stellenbosch winery, Chill Beverages, launched a new sparkling wine called Chateau Del Rei. Conveniently packaged in a can, the bubbly is made primarily of Chenin Blanc grapes. It is lightly sparkling and naturally sweet, with a low alcohol content of 7%.
Family-owned Van Loveren wine farm released Almost Zero in 2018 — a lower-kilojoule, low-alcohol summer drink. The beverage is a Sauvignon Blanc wine with the alcohol removed, with an ABV of 0.5% and 75% fewer kilojoules than a normal glass of wine.
According to Reuters, Constellation Brands is considering selling some of its US wine brands, including Clos du Bois, Mark West, Arbor Mist and Cooks. Wine contributed 38.6% to Constellation’s consolidated net sales in 2018, down from 44.7% in 2018. Its beer business has continued to grow.
In January 2018, Spain’s blue wine producer, Gik Live, introduced an Instagram-friendly pink rosé – Unicorn Tears. The pastel pink wine gets its colour from 'organic pigments' and particles that make it sparkle. Allegedly made with “unicorn tears”, it has fruity, candy-like aroma.
Liqueur
A December 2018 article by The Spirits Business highlighted several indicators in 2018 — from Diageo’s acquisition of Belsazar Vermouth to Regal Rogue's plans for global expansion — that it believes shows that liqueurs and speciality spirits are the limelight as consumers seek longer, lighter serves.
Data from the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI), has signalled a successful year of recovery for Irish cream liqueurs. After what the ABFI called a “lost decade”, preliminary figures suggest exports of the drink grew by 8% in 2018, with the US being the biggest export destination.
According to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association’s (WSTA) 2018 Market Overview report, sales of liqueurs in the UK off-trade were boosted by the hot summer and the craze for colourful cocktails. Sales of non-cream liqueur cocktails increased by 56% as consumers sought out rich images for social media.
In November 2018, UK liqueur brand Hellshire Club partnered with UK pub chain Greene King to release a line of Mrs Cuthbert’s British Gin Liqueurs in on-trade. The range includes four fruity and sweet variants designed to be mixed with prosecco or tonic, or straight over ice.
Spirits
Heaven’s Door Spirits, a brand backed musical icon and Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan, launched its 10 Year Tennessee Straight Bourbon. Made using a traditional 'Lincoln County Process', the bourbon is barrel-aged with a low-rye content. The limited-release bottle features Bob Dylan’s distinctive iron gate sculptures.
In June 2018, Irish gin distiller Jawbox Spirits Co introduced two new gin liqueurs – Pineapple & Ginger Gin Liqueur and Rhubarb & Ginger Gin Liqueur. The former has flavour notes of pineapple and juniper, while the latter has sweet and tangy notes of Rhubarb.
In November 2018, Japanese-inspired UK gin brand Kuro introduced two new limited-edition gins inspired by the slopes of Hakuba Valley in Japan. At 40% ABV, both Kuro Soft Peach and Kuro Cherry Blossom have fruity and sweet notes alongside hints of spruce needles and bamboos.
In November 2018, East London Liquor Company (ELLC) launched its debut rye – London Rye – which is the first London-distilled rye whisky in a century. The spirit was aged in French oak barrels followed by two years in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in PX cask.
