Attitude
‘A predisposition to feel and act in a particular way towards something or someone in a person’s environment.’
Attitudes are learned, judgmental and fairly enduring (resistant to change).
Attitudes based on false information are classed as prejudice.
Components of Attitude
Effective Component
An emotional aspect such as positive feelings like enjoyment or
negative feelings like hostility.
Behavioral Component
The behaviors that we demonstrate in different situations (giving up, avoidance, perseverance, commitment, trying harder)
Cognitive Component
This is the beliefs about something based on past experiences and learning from others.
Factors Affecting Attitude Formation
Culture / Societal Norms / Groups
Cultural expectations and religious beliefs can shape attitudes
(socialisation) due to wanting to belong to a group.
Media
Role Models
Significant others (peer groups/parents/coaches) are often copied or reinforce poor experiences for an individual.
Rebellion
Emotions
Feelings towards things can lead to positive or negative attitude formation
(enjoyment v displeasure)
Ability / Perceptions
Beliefs
The thoughts people have about things based on education (previous experiences or having been influenced by influential others).
Opportunities / Availability
Previous Experiences
Attitudes develop through previous positive or negative
experiences(successes and failures).
