What is agency?

People exercise their agency when they consciously choose to act in ways that are intended to bring about certain effects.

Choice, Intention, and Action

Choice: capacity to make intentional choices about how to act in the world.

Acting: aware of what you're doing. You have intention to act the way that you do and that you are aware that you could make a choice to act otherwise.

Developing a Sensitivity to Design CH 4

How do young people become sensitive to opportunities around them?
-we should encourage them to see that their worlds are largely composed of objects and systems that have been designed and can be redesigned.

What is sensitivity to design? design = structure adapted to a purpose and sensitivity to design = being attuned to the designed dimension of objects and systems with an understanding that the designed world is malleable.

2 parts to Sensitivity to Design: 1st: being attuned to designed dimension of objects and systems. how parts and pieces fit together to serve purposes. 2nd: understanding that the designed world is malleable

Cultivating sensitivity to design (ch 5 notes): 1- looking closely (close, careful, mindful observations) 2- exploring complexity (to think about relationships between various parts of an object.) 3- finding opportunity (seeing potential for building, tinkering, re-designing or hacking)
