Later that day, the expedition rode horses with the Boyar, who asked may questions, but didn't seem very interested in their research. They are then attacked by a dragon, who is scared off by the gunshots from the Boyar's men. Isabella realizes that the dragon attacks could be linked to gunshots, as those were present in every encounter she could think of. Back at the lodge, Isabella and Dahmira sneak out of their rooms at night and Isabella picks the lock to the cellar, opening the door and discovering a laboratory filled with bottles of sulfuric acid, proving the connection to Astimir, and perfectly intact dragon bones. Isabella also finds a ring with Gritelkin's initials engraved on it. Rossi then emerges from another room with a knife in hand and he explains to Isabella that dragons bones are the material of the future, both light and stronge, and that he killed Gritelkin for discovering the secret. Jacob rushes into the room but is stabbed by Rossi before Rossi is knocked out by Dagmira with a bottle. Isabella bounds Rossi in rope before helping Jacob out of the cellar and beginning their escape.
