Why?
On the 14th June 1914, a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo killed the archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary
There was deep rivalry among European nations
What happened?
After the killing of the archduke of Austria-Hungary, the Austria-Hungary started the war against Serbia , then, the Russia, defending the Serbia, declared war to the Austria
The war divided Europe into two armed camps: The Central Powers, composed by Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, and the Allied powers, composed by France, The UK, and Russia
All the states started to combat: the Russia against Austria and Germany, The Germany, against Russia and France, the France and the UK, against Germany, and the Austria-Hungary, against Serbia and France. The first year, only the Italy was neutral
During the second year, the Italy started to combat against Austria, unfortunatelly, it wasn't very lucky because it was defeated a lot of times
The war ended thanks to United States that decided to attack the Germany and to stop the war the 4th november 1918. The end of the war was decided by the Treaty of Versailles
