Naming
-
-
-
If there are multiple of the same length side chain, you add:
-
-
-
Main carbon chain numbered, and branching positions placed at beginning
Isomerism
Isomers are molecules with the same molecular formula, but different structural formulae
-
-
Alkenes
-
-
-
Reactions
-
-
Addition polymerisation
-
-
Increase in mass, chain length and size
Polymers
-
(poly)propene
-
-
Stronger than polyethene—methyl side-chains prevent polymer chains from easily sliding past each other
(poly)chloroethene
-
Uses:
Doors, window frames, drainpipes
Floor coverings, peculiar clothing

Crude Oil
Oil Formation
- Sea creatures die and fall to the bottom of seas and oceans
- Great depth » little oxygen present in water » prevents aerobic decay by bacteria
- Remains covered in sediment – helps to maintain anaerobic environment
- Build up of sediment + movement of rock layers –––> high pressure and 90-120°c » remains converted into crude oil
- Oil migrated through porous rocks until becoming trapped in impervious rock eg. clay. Extracted by drilling
Crude Oil Processing
-
-
- Crude oil heated to 350°c in a furnace—above boiling point so enters column as gas
- Some compounds enter as liquid » removed as residue fraction
- Gases rise up and condense, caught in a tray » similar compounds removed as a particular fraction
- Compounds with the lowest boiling points rise to the top and are removed as gases
