Election

A form of referendum, or vote of the entire population in order to determine a leader, generally president or prime minister.
Parliament/Senate
A group of appointed, directly or indirectly elected individuals who represent the population when passing laws. Parliaments exist in order to avoid having to constantly organize referendums and also balance the executive's power.
