The death penalty should be imposed for driving above the speed limit. Do you agree?
Area of focus 5: Mistakes - Are institutions of justice effective enough to make judgments without error?
Institutions of justice are not effective enough to make judgements without error.
There can be a bias in the court's decision according to the convicted person's age (Steinberg et al, 2009)
Evidence shows that systematic mistakes are unavoidable, however in this case mistakes are worth innocent people‘s lives (Donohue 2015)
According to Gross et al (2015), 4% of prisoners since 1973 up to 2014 who died because of the death penalty actually were innocent
Of course, there were also successful cases in which innocent people were acquitted prior to the execution of their sentence: "The Death Penalty Information Center (2009) reported that in the U.S. since 1973, 139 people in twenty-six states have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence."
Area of focus 1: Deterrence - Does the death penalty prevent crimes? Do people learn from the death penalty?
Capital punishment does not deter crimes(Kenedy 2010, Jiang et al 2010), including speed driving. So capital punishment is not a solution and the death penalty should not be imposed. According to Donohue (2015), there is no evidence that capital punishment efficacy decrease rate of committing crimes.
COUNTER-ARGUMENT: According to Schmidt (2002), Deterrence is the number one reason for supporting capital punishment among Japanese citizens.
Area of focus 4: Education/Rehabilitation - Can criminal be rehabilitated?
People who drives above speed limit should be applied to high tax instead of death penalty
It will provide more financial benefits to victims( Robert Weatherley, Helen Pittam 2015)
Ethically cancelling the death penalty is good as high tax is as efficient as murdering the fast drivers(Jiang 2010).
High tax can reduce the crime rates(Cook 2017)
Area of focus 2: Ethics - is the death penalty morally right?
The defenders of death penalty claim that it is about first of all revenge in principle "Eye for an eye", secondly being totally confident that the murderer won't commit a crime again, and lastly, treating all people equally. The opponents argue that there are innocent victims and mostly those victims are from poor class because they do not have enough money to defend themselves in front of the law. (Andre and Velasquez 2015)
Area of focus 3: Economics - Is the death penalty value for money?
It is supported by the amount of finances that are used for judgement of capital punishment are not effective. In contrast, as Donohue states, The total costs of death penalty in California state would be more effective if they spend it for hiring police officers (2015).
In addition, when government do not have enough money death penalty procedures cannot be funded thus final verdict cannot be proposed (New Mexico Legislature 2017).
However, Liu states that
