Innovative Differentiated Strategies for Grade 4 Science Unit of Matter
Students who Showed Detailed Knowledge of Matter
Students will again complete KWL charts, but this time for each state of matter (solid, liquid, gas).
Students will complete the "K" and "W" charts and then read the states of matter section in the textbook before completing the "L".
Students will then be assigned a task to research 3 different elements, each element being a different state at room temperature. They will need to write a 5 paragraph essay explaining each state and element they chose.
I will have a rubric to grade their writing and to track data for these students

Students who Showed Some Knowledge of Matter
Students will again complete KWL charts, but this time for each state of matter (solid, liquid, gas)
Students will complete the "K" and "L" sections, then read the textbook in pairs to complete the "L" section.
Students will brainstorm with their partners about the different states of matter and how they change.
Students will be assigned a writing task to research the 3 states of matter and write a 5 paragraph essay explaining matter and it's 3 states.
I will use a rubric to grade the writing and track data for these students.

Students who Showed Limited Knowledge of Matter
Students will re-read the section on matter in partners.
They will then watch a video about matter and complete a short quiz in groups after.

They will then be given a writing task to further research and explain matter in 3 paragraphs.
I will use a rubric with easier language to grade the writing and track data for these students
