Why did people go on the third crusade?
Social Motives
Feudal ties
3 Kings went
= Biggest crusade ever
Main body of the crusade went as vassals of one of the kings
Family ties
Went because family went right now
E.g Brother with brother
Also now people were going on crusade because their family had in the past
E.g Richard the lionheart who had a mother who went on crusade (Eleanor of Aquitaine) and a father who had signed up for the crusade.
Political Motives
Minor in the 3rd Crusade
A factor in the 2nd crusade but not the 1st
Knights who are not your vassals and support them financially = Increased comradity
Henry II was motivated this way
Tried to send the archbishop to Scotland and Wales to get people to join
Failed in Scotland but had some success in Wales
Religious motives
Like the 1st crusade
Objective Jerusalem
Far higher recruitment
Frederick Barbarossa
80,000 troops which = more than the whole 1st crusade
Remission of sins as always was offered
More convincing than the 2nd crusade because the aim being Jerusalem
Guy is seen as a failure because no land to his name.
Economic motives
Similar with the 1st crusade
All land available except Tyre because Conrad has taken Tyre
Strong possibility of land and wealth
Conrad marries Isabella (Princess of Jerusalem) to have a claim to the throne
Guy’s whole family died and this left him with a far weaker claim to the throne
There was far more land
This caused a recruitment drive
Saladin Tithe
Richard & Philip
Tax on movable goods (10%)
Did not have to deal with legal problems
The tax was an incentive in England because Richard had been successful in raising it.
On the other hand Philip had been less successful
Philip then ended up poorer than Richard
Richard can pay his troops more and therefore it caused people to desert Philip and join Richard’s army for higher pay.
