levels of measurement
-
Ordinal Data=ordered data- like place in a race - we understand the relationship between the places -e.g that 1st place is better than 2nd place etc. BUT theres no true mathematical value - dont know how fast you were in the race etc- just know the positions.
Interval Data= where the interval/ gaps between values are standardised (equal). Interval is higher than the other two. Examples of interval data= temperature- has true mathematical value. But there is not a true value of zero as can go below zero- e.g temperature can go into minus numbers
Ratio Data= where there is a true value of zero- e.g height in cm- cant go into minus numbers. has true mathematical value.
-
RELIABILITY= the extent to which a test or measurement produces consistent results. RESULST CAN BE RELIABLE AND NOT VALID
-
-
-
VALIDITY= the extent to which results accurately measure what they set out to measure. Validity can be improved by improving reliability
INTERNAL VALIDITY= whether the results are due to the manipulation of the IV and have not been affected by cofounding variables .
can be improved by reducing investigator effects, demand characteristics and by using a random sample and standardised instructions and high level of control
EXTERNAL VALIDITY= the extent to which teh results can be genralised to other settings(ecological validity), other people(population validity) and over time (temporal validity)
