Hormone control of metabolic rate
Metabolic rate
Metabolic rate is the overall speed at which chemical reactions occur in your body
Thyroxine affects your metabolic rate
Negative feedback increases in thyroxine causes a decrease in thyroxine
This control mechanism that reacts to a change in a condition
Adrenalin
Released from adrenal glands
Released in frightening/exciting situations - the spinal cord sends nerve impulses to adrenal glands which release adrenalin
Adrenalin has many target organs
Diagram
Low amounts of thyroxine is dected by the hypothalamus
Hypothalamus releases TRH which stimulates the thyroxine gland to release TSH
This stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroxine to to target organs
Increased amounts of thyroxine is now detected by the hypothalamus
This inhibits the release of TRH which then inhibits the release of TSH.
This stops thyroxine production
How adrenalin affects body
Heart
Contracts more rapidly
Increases blood pressure
Increase heart rate
Wide blood vessel
Leading to muscles widen
Increase blood flow to muscles
Decrease blood pressure
Narrow blood vessel
Blood vessels
Leading to other organs are narrow
Reduction of blood flow to organs
Increase blood pressure
Liver
Changes glycogen --> glucose
Glucose released into blood
Increase blood glucose concentration & respiration
