chapter 8, the nervous system.
8-1
the nervous system monitors the internal and external environments. it integrates the sensory info, and ordinates voluntary and involuntary responses.
the nervous system has 2 major anatomical divisions. the CNS ( central nervous system) consisting of the brain and spinal cord. the CNS also controls intelligence, memory, and emotion... All communication between the CNS and the rest of the body occurs over the peripheral nervous system.(PNS) which includes all neural tissue outside the CNS. sensory and motor neurons.
-
8-2
the nervous system includes all the neural tissue in the body, neural tissues consists of two kinds of cells, neurons and neuroglia.
the neuralgia regulate the environment around neurons, provide a supporting framework for neural tissue, and acts as phagocytes.
a representative neuron has a cell body, several branching, sensitive dendrites, which receive incoming signals and elongate axon, which carries outgoing signals toward one or more synaptic terminals.
clusters of rough ER and free ribosomes, known as Nissl Bodies, give a gray color to areas containing neuron cell bodies and account for the color of gray matter seen in brain and spinal cord dissections.

the largest and most numerous of the glacial cells in the central nervous system are the astrocytes.
the myelin sheath that surrounds the axons of some of the neurons in CNS are formed by oligodendrocytes.
