Clinical Manifestations
Upper abdominal pain
Nausea
Bloody vomit/stool
Vomiting
Patients may be asymptomatic
Fullness/anorexia
Treatment
Antacids
Histamine blockers
Discontinuation of causative medications
Proton pump inhibitors
Antibiotics if H. pylori infection
Epidemiology
More common in those with H. pylori infections and chronic NSAID/tobacco/alcohol use
Can affect fundus or antram of stomach or both
Can be acute or chronic
Pathophysiology
Inflammation of the gastric mucosa follows
Antral gastritis - increase in gastric secretions
Fundal gastritis - decrease in gastric secretions
Damage occurs to mucosal layer due to drugs or H. pylori
Diagnosis
Endoscopy with biopsy
Stool or breath test for H. pylori
Barium swallow
