What is Illustration
An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for integration in published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films
What are Picture Books
A picture book is a book with a simple story and few words, targeted towards younger children who are not good at reading. It contains simple pictures and illustrations, so that children can understand the story without having to read the story.
Illustration Process for Picture Books
1)
Create a sketch in black and white
Start with a rough, uncolored sketch. Do this for all the scenes that need illustrations.
2)
Create a “pencil”
Final drawings are called pencils. Finalise your drawing and begin its last sketch.
3)
Start coloring in
Color the background and foreground separately. Light colors first & darker ones after.
4)
Create the cover art
Keep the audience in mind while planning. Make sure it is aesthetically pleasing.
5)
Finalise the cover design
Use different font sizes and colors to make the cover eye catching.
Role of an illustrator
An illustrator is an artist who creates two-dimensional images for plenty of companies and industries, for example, magazines, websites, children’s books, and technical designs and advertising. It is the illustrator’s job to use various techniques to create effects such as the simplicity of black and white, richness of color and the use of light and shadows. In specific to children’s book, the illustrator creates pictures that appear beside the text written for a story.
