Hazardous environments
Earthquake
-
Tectonic plate-
A rigid segment of the Earth’s crust which can ‘float’ across the heavier, semi-molten rocks below.
Subduction-
The pushing down of one tectonic plate under another at a collision plate margin; pressure and heat convert the plate into magma.
-
Measurements:
Mercalli scale- The mercalli scale is used to measure the effects and strength of an earthquake based often on what is seen. A level 10 earthquake would have high levels of visible destruction and the earthquake would be felt by everyone
Moment magnitude scale- The moment magnitude scale measures the scale of events based on the amount of energy released. Specifically the moment magnitude scale looks at how much rock movement has occured due to energy levels
Volcano
-
-
-
The loud crack that is heard when a volcano erupts does a lot of damage such as hearing loss and broken glass
-
Tropical storm
-
Occurs over sub-tropical waters and moves over the ocean towards land where it usually dies down due to there being no warm water to strengthen the tropical cyclone
