Protists
Animal Like Protists
They are heterotrophs and unicellular
Animal like protists are also known as protozoans
Sarcodines grow pseudopods
The psuedopods use cytoplasm to make the sarcodine move
Amoebas collect extra water with a contractile vacuole
Cilia are leg like hairs that help to move ciliates
Flagellate use flagella to move
Flagella are long thin tails
Symbiosis is when two organisms have a relationship where they benefit from each other
Sometimes organisms have a negative affect on their host like Giardia for example
Parasites feed off of their hosts
These parasites move in all different ways and some have multiple hosts
Plantlike Protists
Plantlike protists can also be known as algae
all of them are autotrophs
Algae can be food for other organisms
Some algae are unicellular and some are multicellular
Algae can have different pigments or colors such as green, red, brown, orange, etc.
Diatoms are unicellular and live in water
Many of them move by slime and are food for other water organisms
When multiple diatoms die they can fuse together to become diatomaceous earth
Dinoflagellates come in different colors because of their pigments
They use flagella that spin to move
Some of them glow in the dark
Eugleniods are unicellular and live in fresh water
They can be autotrophs or heterotrophs when they need to be
They use flagella to move
The eugleniods can use the eyespot to find light
The different pigments of algae affect how it lives
Red algae live in deep water and are multicellular
It's seaweed and can be eaten
Green algae can be uni or multicellular
Most live in water but can live on land in moist areas
Some people think green algae belongs in the plant kingdom because of similarities it has with plants
Brown algae
Most brown algae anchors itself to rocks and floats upright in the water
It can be eaten or used as a thickener
Fungus Like Protists
They are heterotrophs and have cell walls
Slime molds live in moist places
They use pseudopods to move and feed
They can form together to make bigger groups
Water molds and downy mildews live in moist places
They grow and form like threads
They get nutrients by feeding on crops
What is a Protist?
Protists can't be classified as animals, plants or fungi
They are eukaryotes
