Eye/Endocrine system, Kennedy Abraham, Period 5
Major functions of the eye
cornea- clear covering
iris- controls size of pupil
lens- focus the light rays to the fovea
ciliary body- controls shape of lens
choroid- a dark layer
retina- layer of the sensory receptors cells
sclera- white part of the eye
Major functions of the endocrine
growth
defense in the body
Metabolism and energy balance
general homeostasis and water
Reproduction
Diseases associated with the endocrine system
Type 2 diabetes- when the body makes insulin but the cells don't respond to it
crushing disease- too much cortisol in the body for a certain amount of time
Type 1 diabetes- when beta cells don't make insulin and blood sugar is too high
Goiter- when the thyroid swells
Hypothyroidnism- when adults fully sized bodies but child like portions
Hormones produced and their target organs/ functions
Prolactin- Targets mammary glands and produces milk
adrenaline- targets the nervous system and increases flow of blood to the brain
Oxytocin- targets the uterine and releases the breat milk during feeding
Melatonin- targets hypotonen brain and causes the feeling of drowsy at night
Growth hormone- Targets cells and increases growth
Major glands/organs and functions
exocrine- secretes products into ducts
endocrine glands- secretes into body cells to affect target cells
Pituitary- stimulates hormones "master of glands"
paracrines- affect neighboring cells
Pancreas- regulates blood sugar
autocrine- they affect themselves
