Eye & Endocrine System Destiny Espitia per.5
Major Functions of Endocrine System
:
made up of cells, tissues, & organs that secrete hormones in to body fluid
body has 2 kind of glands,
exocrine gland:
Secrete products into duct//
Endocrine gland:
Secrete products into body fluids to affect target cells
Works w/ nervous system to maintain homeostasis
Function is to communicate w/ cells using chemical called hormones
Major glands/organs & Functions
Endocrine gland:
pituitary gland, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, pineal, reproductive (ovaries & testes), thymus gland
Exocrine gland: secretes products into ducts
Endocrine gland & hormones regulate a # of metabolic processes w/in celss and the whole body
Master gland: pituitary
Glands: thyroid, adrenal, pineal, and parathyroid
Hormones produced and their target organs/functions
Hormones diffuse into blood stream to act on target cells
actions are precise, only affect specific target cells
Endocrine gland & hormones regulate a # of metabolic processes w/in cells & the whole body
Diseases w/ Endocrine System
Graves Disease: auto immune system causes hyperthyroidism
Cushings disease: too much cortisol on body for prolonged period of time
Diabetes mellitus: type 1 diabetes: beta cells do not make insulin leading to blood sugar being too high
Goiter: swelling of thyroid
hyper secretion of Gh// child results in glgantism// adults results in aromegaly/ overgrown of hands, feet, face
hyperthyroidism: may be genetic or caused by tumor on thyroid, cause rapid heat beat, weightloss, high metabolic rate
Major Structures & Functions of eye
Sclera: fibrous white part of eye
Choroid: dark pigment layer ( under sclera)
Pupil: Opening that lets light into eye
Iris: Controls size of pupil
Lens: focuses light rays onto forea
Ciliary body (muscle): controls shape of lens
Viterous humor: jelly like fluid; maintain shape of eyeball
Aqueous humor: water fluid behind cornea (anterior to lens)
Retina: layer of sensory receptor cells
Forea: small depression w/ high concentration of cones (sharp focus)
Optic disc: region w/ no receptors , receptor connect w/ optic nerve
Conjunctiva: mucous membrane covering the front surface of sclera & lining of the eyelid
