Recessive Genes
-
Example: Blue eyes is a recessive gene. If your dad inherits you the blue eyes gene and your mom inherits the brown eye gene. You will be born with brown eyes because brown ayes a dominant genes
Explanation: A recessive gene is a gene that is hidden physically when a dominant gene is present. It is only present physically when both parents inheret the gene to the offspring.
-
Mendel
-
Example: Lets say both parents have a blue and brown eyes gene. Their offspring has a 75% chance to have brown eyes and 25% chance to have blue eyes
-
Dominant Genes
Example:Your eye color again. Brown is the dominant so if your dad passes down the brown eye gene and your mom give you the blue eye gene you will have brown eyes.
-
-
Question: Can a gene be both recessive and dominant and with if the offspring has only dominant genes or the other way around?
Genotype
-
-
Example: Lets say there are 2 different hair colors genes present. Lets represent them with "A" and "a". There are 4 different possible combinations or genotypes.
Phenotype
-
-
Example: There are 2 different genes for hair color. So there are only 2 phenotype. In other words there are only two ways the train can be seen
-
Punnet Square
-
-
Example: Lets say their is a red father flower and a white mother flower. The offspring can be 1 of 2 colors. It can be red "PP","Pp","pP" pr white "pp"
Homozygous
-
-
Example: Lets say the blue color gene is represented by "B" and green eye gene is represented by "b". The homozygous pair for these genes are "BB" and "bb"
Heterozygous
-
Example: The blue eye color gene is represented by "B" and green color gene is "b". A heterozygous gene pair is "Bb"
