Eye and Endocrine System - Cristina Medina P.2
EYE
Major Structures
Fibrous Layer
Sclera: protects the eye and gives it shape
Cornea: allows light to enter the eye
Vascular Layer
Choroid: provides nutrients to the eye, prevents light from scattering
Ciliary bodies: its muscles control the lens shape
Iris: controls the size of the pupil
Inner Layer
Retina: has an outer pigmented layer and inner neural layer which contains photoreceptors, bipolar cells, and ganglion cells
Lens
Chambers & Fluids
Aqueous humor: helps support the eyeball internally, supplies nutrients and oxygen to lens and cornea, and carries away metabolic wastes
Vitreous humor: supports the eyeball and keeps the retina in place
Major Functions
Accessory structures
Eyebrow: shades and protects the eye
Eyelid: shields and lubricates the eye; has sebaceous and sweat glands
Conjunctiva: lines the eyelids, covers and lubricates the anterior eyeball
Lacrimal apparatus: consists of lacrimal gland, canaliculi, sac and nasolacrimal duct which all contribute to tears that clean the eyes and are an emotional response
Extrinsic eye muscles: move the eyeballs
