OTB Chapter 6 PT 2
-
intergroup competition
identify a common enemy to reunite the group, appeal to a common goal, initiate direct negotiations between groups, train members of the group to work cooperatively
prevent it by: rewarding groups for their contributions, avoid win-lose competitions for impt rewards, reward groups for helping another group, stimulate frequent interactions between members of different groups and rotate members or prevent groups from withdrawing and becoming isolated
disadvantages- divert energies away from performance of tasks, grudges, animosities, biased and selective viewpoints of one group towards another.
advantage: work harder, become more focused on key tasks, more internal cohesion & satisfaction and higher level of creativity (when properly harnessed)

-
emergent behaviours
task groups group members do in addition to or in place of what is formally asked of them by the organisation
