Job Design
the planning and specification of job tasks and the work setting in which they are to be accomplished
objective- to make jobs meaningful, interesting and challenging
Job Simplification- standardizing work procedures and employing people in clearly defined and specialized tasks
increased operating efficiency, low-skill and low-cost labour, minimal training requirements and controlled production quantity.
loss of efficiency due to low-quality work, high rates of absenteeism and turnover and the need to pay high wages to get people to do unattractive jobs, lacks challenger and lead to boredom
Job Enlargement
may add variety and alleviate boredom with mundane tasks but there may be limits to how much it might stimulate and satisfy the job holder
increasing task variety by combining into one tasks of similar skill levels that were previously assigned to separate workers
job rotation- periodically shifting workers among jobs involving different tasks at similar levels of skill
if rotated among a series of similar jobs, they may experience many boring jobs instead of merely a single boring job
Vertical loading- increases job depth by adding responsibilities previously controlled by supervisors
