Pre-Assessment - 6th Grade World History
12 students who have some prior knowledge of the topic
Differentiated strategies
Preparing slideshows, including videos/animations to further reinforce learning content
Allow students to retest/retake assessments to improve their grade
Include activities that reinforce understanding of concepts, eg. matching vocabulary with definitions
Use Think, Pair, Share - Students pair up with a partner to work together to answer a question, solve a problem, or share what they've learned about a topic, theme or concept
Regular chapter readings and students will record notes on important points - to practice and develop note-taking skills.
Virtual Journeys through history (exploring the Medieval Times) to further develop knowledge, learn from a different perspective, stimulate visual senses
Formative Assessments
Creating timelines - to show historical points from that era
Written summaries on a text
Exit Tickets (Whole class)

Pre-Assessment Activity
Brainstorm/Mind map
Students will be given the opportunity to Brainstorm or create a mind map to demonstrate what they know about
the Middle Ages.
Students will have the freedom to either write or draw any information that comes to mind regarding this era in History
Students should write or draw what they know according to the themes provided to help them:
Mediaval Times, Religions in Europe, Charlemagne, Feudalism (social hierarchy)
, as well anything else they can think of relating to The Middle Ages
Multiple choice Quiz
All the Brainstorm/Mind Maps will be collected and examined. A multiple choice quiz will then be passed out to the students and collected at the end of class to further gauge the level of understanding from students.

Differentiated strategies/accomodations
ELL students
Provide a list of key terms, core vocabulary words and meanings they will need to know for this topic, eg.
medieval, monks, monasteries, chivalry, Christianity, Charlemagne
Allow students to have dictionaries on had during lessons, in case there are words they are not familiar with
Include images and pictures paired with texts so students can make visual connections
Providing practice tests in advance
Reading questions aloud to the student
Leniency for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors as long as main points are communicated (errors will still be corrected and handed back to student).
For certain tasks, allow answers to be submitted in bullet form, instead of paragraphs.
Communicate and coordinate with ELL teacher on other words or vocabulary that students need to learn or practice, as well as other skills, such as sentence stems, structures, etc.
If students are tested and have learning disabilities
Include images and pictures paired with texts so students can make visual connections
Students can submit answers/responses in digital form, through their devices if needed
Reading questions aloud to the student
Communicate and coordinate with learning specialist on areas that students are performing well and which areas that they need to work on or require help.
Make accomodations for students within the classroom. Allowing students to take assessments orally, electronically, or have someone write on their behalf
Provide practice tests so students can prepare before hand
Provide regular breaks in between to break up time during periods, allow students the chance to move about
Teaching concepts in shorter periods, focus on one concept until students grasp content before moving forward
Allow for more time during class to complete tasks/assessments. Increase deadline for homework if needed
Regular concept checking with students to ellicit correct answers
Provide more time/attention to work with struggling students
