Organisational Theory & Behaviour Chapter 1
OB is the study of individuals and groups in work organisations
goal to help people and organisations achieve high performance levels
Performance equation
individual personal attributes (capacity to perform)
work effort ( willingness to perform)
organisational support (opportunity to perform)
why organisations exist
because individuals are limited in their physical and mental capabilities
by working together, synergy can be achieved, achieving more than any individual could be working alone
organisations as open systems
obtain human and material inputs from the external envt
transform inputs into outputs (finished goods and services)
offer them back to the external envt for consumption
if envt values these outputs, then the organisation survives
if not, it fails to sustain subsequent inputs for production and ceases to operate
role of managers
1) ensure task performance (quality and quantity of work produced or services provided)
2) human resource maintenance (attraction and continuation of a capable workforce over time)
does 1 and 2 by keeping the psychological contract in balance
a psychological contract is individuals expectations regarding what they and the organisation expects to give and receive from each other.
issues affecting organisations
globalisation- becoming increasingly international in character
changes to the nature of work- advances in technology, growth of the services sector, increased reliance on knowledge.
diversity- more multicultural, older and more women in the workforce and requests for work-life balance
