Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Why do we need to do ?
Pre-assessment helps us understand where students are with content, identifying what needs to be taught and what can be skipped in the creation of a more personalized learning experience.
Pre-assessment helps us determine student levels for grouping and differentiated instruction.
Pre-assessment can help us to determine students’ knowledge of formatting and technical requirements for a course.
We can make pre-assessments informal such that students never even know we are assessing them.
How to do?

Group 1
:
Beginner
(the 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs)
I am teaching physical education in grade 1-8, but I will use this method to grade 1-3, and I will apply the story to physical education.
I will prepare learning stations. Students will receive a picture of the movement skills in motion step by step for each station. They can begin to practice one by one using the picture at the station.
Group 2
:
Future Star
(the 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills)
I will prepare quizzes that will help them think about the action of running step by step at each station. Students will have to answer all the quizzed while they are running around to each station.
For Example: Do you need to swing your arms while you are running?
Do you need to bring your knee up high while you are running?
Group 3
:
Amateur
(the 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly)
I will prepare a self-checklist/self evaluation or peer assessment with questions for them to grow. Students will have to check the movement skills of their partners and give advice to each other. Also
For example: What is the most important motion If you want to run fast?
How can you improve your speed?
